What do we do at the BUCK Cancer Foundation?
BUCK supports endeavors that build a bridge between ALL viable forms of cancer research and treatment — natural, holistic, AND conventional — to provide greater comfort to cancer patients during treatment while working toward a cure. We do this by funding research into complementary cancer treatments and by providing educational grants to students pursuing a degree in integrative medicine or a complementary cancer treatment. We also provide much-needed goods and services to local cancer patients as part of our Warm Hugs from BUCK program.

BUCK Market Research Survey
The BUCK Cancer Foundation is only possible because of you, our great supporters. Last year, BUCK took advantage of its directors working from home, and held a series of meetings to update our 5-Year Strategic Plan. It became quite clear that we needed to enhance our Marketing efforts to make sure that the message of BUCK is being received by those who need it. As part of this effort, we launched a market research initiative to better understand our target audience – cancer patients and caregivers!
One of the programs funded by donations to BUCK Cancer Foundation is our medical research grant program, which underwrites research studies on natural and holistic treatments and how they complement conventional cancer care. While funding of these grants managed by clinical researchers is vital, we also want to know more about the cancer community to help ensure that the other programs we offer continue to be relevant, useful and valued. YOU can help us if you are a current cancer patient or are a caregiver to a cancer patient, by taking our short (confidential) survey. Click on the link below; we value your input!

Warm Hugs in Delco & $5,000 Grant to CHOP
During the week of Giving Tuesday 2021, BUCK’s masked bandits were at in again! They delivered 200 Warm Hugs to 5 Cancer Centers in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. These Warm Hugs were funded by the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund administered by Wells Fargo for cancer patients in Delaware County. A big Warm Hugs thanks to Ethel from BUCK!!
Our Warm Hugs were COVID-19 Care Packages, which included a mask, hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial wipes, and were delivered to the wonderful cancer centers at the Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill, Crozer-Keystone Cancer Centers in Upland, Broomall and Brinton Lakes and the Cancer Center at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Darby. Thanks to all the wonderful health care workers at these amazing Delco cancer centers, who take such good care of our local cancer community!
Speaking of amazing – BUCK is proud to announce another medical research grant. This time, we selected a Yoga study at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This study focuses on the feasibility of using yoga as a pain management tool for pediatric cancer patients and will be led by Tracey Jubelirer, MD, an attending physician at the CHOP Cancer Center.
“Children can experience significant pain related to cancer itself and its treatments,” said Dr. Jubelirer. “Research on the use of non-pharmacologic therapies to alleviate cancer related pain is critical in understanding effectiveness of such interventions.” Dr. Jubelirer’s study will be limited to children with high-risk neuroblastoma, for which the immunotherapy treatment used can cause significant pain during infusion.
BUCK’s Medical Research Program accepts grant applications from May 1 to July 31. Over the last five years, the program has funded over $20,000 in research studies. To read more, please see our attached Press Release.

As a result, BUCK formed a Market Research Committee, to ensure our messaging is getting to our target audience. BUCK is embarking on a series of research interviews over the next couple of months. We will be interviewing cancer patients, caregivers and other supporters of BUCK to better understand what our audience wants, what they need and what we can do to provide greater comfort to cancer patients. If you are interested in participating in our market research, please contact our Market Research Consultant, Joy Gupta, at JGupta@buckcancerfoundation.org.
Our CAM Insights section covers everything from what we have learned about integrative therapies, their prevalence, their use, and patients’ adoption of these therapies. We focus on clinician and nurse involvement and their ongoing concerns. Last but not least, do not forget about our Annual Community Yard sale on October 16th! Healing with The Blues & Warm Hugs from BUCK!
You asked and we listened. On Thursday, June 10, we held our second virtual happy hour, Healing with The Blues. We tested the knowledge of all our Blues aficionados, who really came to play. The winner cleaned up with a brand-new Roomba! We also had a raffle for everyone who donated more than $10 to BUCK, and the winner received two complimentary tickets to Longwood Gardens. One of our Pay A BUCK Forward grant recipients from 2018, Jocelyn Flay, helped us connect with our true source while explaining the medicinal benefits of reiki. Paired with the musical stylings of Delaware’s own Venom Blues, our participants started the “healing process” — all from the comfort of their home. Thank you to everyone that attended, donated and congrats to our trivia and raffle winners!
More great news! BUCK recently received a $3,000 grant from the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund administered by Wells Fargo for our Warm Hugs from BUCK program. “We are honored to receive this grant,” said Foundation President, Lori Nonnemaker. “We started our Warm Hugs from BUCK program about five years ago to provide much-needed goods and supplies to cancer patients in the Philadelphia area. We have ‘hugged’ over 700 patients since 2016. With this generous grant, we will be providing COVID-19 care packages to the local cancer community in Delaware County. We expect to deliver these ‘hugs’ over the summer so our cancer patients can remain safe as we head into the fall season.”
Deliveries of goods are made by the Foundation volunteers. Those interested in joining the Foundation’s efforts are encouraged to email info@buckcancerfoundation.org or visit the Foundation’s website at www.buckcancerfoundation.org to learn more about other ways to contribute to the Foundation’s mission.
Get Your Beach Body On!
Are you getting excited for the Summer? Check out our Spring 2021 Newsletter below! We cover everything from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommendations on nutrition and healthy eating to recommendations for exercising, and how to get yourself moving and active this summer. Our BUCK-a-Pound Weight Loss Competition is ongoing, check out the latest updates and ways you can support our participants!
Looking for ways to get active and healthy this summer? Recommendations for exercise vary but doctors suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 of vigorous aerobic activity per week. It is important to include strength and flexibility training, at least twice a week. Balance exercises are a good addition to your routine. Discuss your exercise routine with your doctor before getting started, and consider consulting a trainer certified by the American College of Sports Medicine.
Some fun ways you can get active this summer include: biking, hiking, swimming, gardening, and walking. Enjoy a nice weekend hike or trail walk with your family or friends, or take the family out for a beach day! Make sure to keep yourself hydrated with 8-10 cups of water per day. Finally, take some time to relax this summer, to get active, and to spend some quality time with family and friends!
Spring into Nutrition!
Spring into the Season with BUCK! As our BUCK-a-Pound fundraiser is ongoing this spring, we decided to focus our attention on some ways you can get yourself healthy and active this season. There are a lot of messages about what you should and should not eat, so we are here to simplify nutrition and help you make healthy decisions! Harvard’s Healthy Eating Plate recommends eating mostly vegetables, fruit, whole grains, healthy fats, and healthy proteins. They also suggest drinking water instead of sugary beverages, and reducing your sodium and alcohol intake.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics tips for eating right for a healthy weight include: setting a plan for lifelong health, planning your meals ahead of time, and balancing your plate with a variety of foods. Half your plate should be fruits and vegetables, one fourth should be protein like lean meat, beans, fish or poultry, and one fourth should be grains. You can complete your plate with fat-free or low-fat milk, cheese, or yogurt. If you are looking for a personalized eating plan, the MyPlate Plan will give you the correct amounts of each food group you need daily for your height, weight, and physical activity level. https://www.myplate.gov/myplate-plan

ROAD TRIP! MASKED UP AND READY TO GO!!
Earlier in October, we packed up the car with our Big Check and several bags of Warm Hugs for the cancer patients and staff at GW Center for Integrative Medicine in Washington, D.C. Dr. Kogan and Dr. Orceyre are doing some amazing work at the Center by providing greater comfort to cancer patients and in August, due to the generosity of our supporters, our Board was able to approve a $5,000 medical research grant for a landmark study on Mercury Toxicity. This small open label trial will assess the possible link between mercury toxicity and risks and outcomes of 20 breast and prostate cancer patients. BUCK's grant will fund the researcher's time.
"This grant from BUCK will be instrumental for us to cover mine and Dr. Deirdre Orceyre's time," said Dr. Mikhail Kogan, medical director at GWICM and lead researcher for this study. "We have also secured additional support from Quicksilver Scientific, a specialized laboratory that offers one of the best available mercury tests on the market. They will not only be providing us free mercury testing pre/post treatment but also a complete heavy metal panel on each patient. The proposed project will seek to further understand and demonstrate the link between mercury toxicity and hormonal cancers, specifically prostate & breast cancers but may be expanded to include all heavy metals."
We are excited about the preliminary study and our continued work with George Washington University and the Center for Integrative Medicine. Check out some photos from our trip!
MEET OUR NEW HIRE and HER PASSION IN NUTRITION!
In August, BUCK hired an Associate Executive Director, Caroline MacDonald is a second-degree student in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at La Salle University. She is majoring in Dietetics, in preparation to receive her Master's and become a licensed Registered Dietitian.
A self-starter who has a passion for integrative therapies and how food can be used for medicinal purposes., Caroline is a perfect fit for the BUCK Cancer Foundation. Her role at BUCK is to assist with our social media presence, updating our website, and helping with administrative tasks. We are excited to have her join the BUCK Cancer Foundation!
Since our new Associate Executive Director is a future Registered Dietitian, we decided to highlight the importance of Nutrition and Healthy Eating. Good Nutrition is important for everyone, especially for people battling cancer. Eating well can help maintain strength and energy and decrease the risk of infection.
Good nutrition starts with the essentials: carbohydrates, protein, fat, and water. Protein helps to ensure growth, repair body tissue, and to maintain a healthy immune system. Carbohydrates supply the body with the bulk of the calories it needs, and fats supply our bodies with energy, cell growth support, and cushioning for organs. Many of our essential nutrients can be met with fruits and cruciferous vegetables, which regulate enzymes and lower the risk of several types of cancers such as head and neck, esophageal, stomach, lung, pancreatic and prostate cancer. Water and fluids are also vital to health. Dehydration can cause headaches, muscle cramps, lack of energy, and confusion.

DELIVERING SAFE HANDS!
In March, Eight Oaks Farm Distillery in New Tripoli, PA
turned its operations to producing much-needed hand sanitizer for the local
area. When BUCK reached out to them about donating a few cases so we could
deliver them to cancer patients, they resoundingly said “YES”. Eight Oaks donated
6 cases of hand sanitizer that we picked up on April 21. Since then, BUCK’s
masked bandits and their pups have made no-contact deliveries to Penn Medicine in Chester County, Sidney Kimmel at Jefferson in Philadelphia, Mercy Cancer Center in Delaware County and soon to be delivered to Crozer Chester Cancer Center in Broomall! We will be working with each hospital for our 2020 Warm
Hugs from BUCK program in which we provide much-needed items to cancer patients
(such as warm socks, water bottles, warm blankets or now, hand sanitizer!),
which we will be planning for later this year. Thanks to Eight Oaks Farm
Distillery and the great oncology teams at these wonderful local cancer centers –

TAI CHI & AI-INDUCED JOINT PAIN.
In June, our Board approved a $5,000 medical research grant to Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center - Jefferson Health. This grant is to study the effects Tai Chi has on relieving aromatase inhibitor (AI)-induced joint pain in breast cancer survivors. The study is led by Kuang-Yi Wen, PhD.
“We are very excited about the grant from the BUCK Cancer Foundation for this study.” Kuang-Yi said. “Aromatase inhibitors-induced arthralgia (joint pain) has clearly been an important though understudied problem among postmenopausal women with breast cancer. Up to half of women on aromatase inhibitor therapy may have significant joint pain, which can lead to discontinuation of the medicine, but there are few proven therapies to help women with this troublesome side effect.”
BUCK visited the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Support and Welcome Center on Tuesday, September 12, to tour the facility, meet the researcher and present the check! The Cancer Support Center offers free support groups, classes, counseling and more for cancer patients, caregivers, and anyone touched by the disease.
Congratulations, Kuang-Yi Wen and Jefferson Health! Please follow the link below to read our Press Release.
OUR BOARD HAS SURE BEEN BUSY!
During our last submission period ending April 30, we received a lot of great applications from students. After a thorough review of each application, our Board decided to approved another tuition-assistance grant for $1,000 as part of our Pay A BUCK Forward (PABF) program. This grant was made possible because of a legacy donation from Stephen J. McElvarr.
And the winner is...Jocelyn Flay, a student pursuing her Masters of Acupuncture Studies at the Won Institute of Graduate Studies! Jocelyn's work with the Nutritional Wellness Center in Palmyra, New Jersey, and her passion for Reiki, complement her formal education from Rutgers Unversity and the Won Institute. These experiences, as well as her holistic approach to integrative care, made her a great candidate for our PABF Grant. Our press release is at the link below. Congratulations, Jocelyn!
The BUCK Cancer Foundation offers two grant periods and awards at least one educational grant a year. BUCK’s goal is to help fund the education of future physicians supportive of integrative medicine. The President of BUCK, Lori Nonnemaker, stated that, “BUCK is focused on making integrative oncology standard cancer care in America.” BUCK’s next educational grant period opens on November 1 and ends December 31, 2019.
